Jeffrey Crowley, a senior research scholar at Georgetown University's Health Policy Institute, will lead federal efforts in HIV/AIDS policy and help guide the administration's development of disability policies.
Obama said in a statement Thursday that Crowley "brings the experience and expertise that will help our nation address the ongoing HIV/AIDS crisis and help my administration develop policies that will serve Americans with disabilities."
According to his resume on the Georgetown University web site, Crowley served in various positions at the National Association of People with AIDS, where he worked from 1994 to 2000, such as deputy executive director for programs and associate executive order.
The Blade reported last week that Obama intended to fill the position even after former President George W. Bush kept the office vacant during the last two years of his administration. The long-term vacancy had raised questions of whether Obama planned to abolish the office.
In a statement Thursday, Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said Crowley's appointment "signals that HIV/AIDS issues will be an integral part of health care reform in the Obama administration."
"With Crowley's leadership, we look forward to working with the Office of National AIDS Policy in setting an aggressive agenda to combat HIV/AIDS in our country," Solmonese said.
Crowley could not immediately be reached for comment.
