The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria says it has received more than half the $7 billion needed to keep its operations going through 2007.
The organization says 29 nations meeting in London pledged Tuesday a total of $3.7 billion.
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan says the pledges will help countries establish comprehensive programs to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. He added that the pledges provide hope that major progress can be made in reversing the spread of infectious diseases.
The head of the fund's board, Carol Jacobs, called the pledges a strong base for funding the organization's programs for fighting the three diseases.
The fund says a follow-up conference will be held next June to secure more pledges.
