Uganda to Investigate Alleged AIDS Fund Mismanagement

Voice of America - August 25, 2005
VOA News

Uganda's president says he will investigate alleged mismanagement in his government that led the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to suspend grants to the country.

President Yoweri Museveni said Thursday, he will personally find out how the Health Ministry is using funds from the organization.

He said the move would not affect the fight against AIDS in Uganda, which has long been hailed as a model on the continent for combating the disease. Mr. Museveni said Uganda's struggle against AIDS began long before the Global Fund was created in 2002.

The organization announced the suspension Wednesday, but said aid could resume if the Ugandan government provided a full accounting by October. It said it would ensure current projects for AIDS patients are not disrupted.
