The Global AIDS Attitudes Survey, published by World Vision, also reported that about 25 percent of the people surveyed indicated they believed the media "greatly exaggerated" problems associated with epidemic, the United Nations said in a news release. The survey was conducted in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain and the United States.
Survey results were released Thursday, two days before World AIDS Day.
Bunmi Makinwa, director of the U.N. program on HIV/AIDS in New York, said the survey is valuable because "the more we understand the epidemic, the better we can make policies (and) the better we can make programs."
Richard Stearns, World Vision-United States president, said the survey also showed "an astounding" nine out of 10 people indicated the global community has a moral obligation to respond to the AIDS crisis, Stearns said.
"The vast majority of people think their governments and individuals globally should be responding decisively to turn the tide and come to the aid of people living with HIV and AIDS," he said.
