Younger New York City men getting HIV

United Press International - September 13, 2007

NEW YORK, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Preliminary New York health department data show HIV infection is increasing among young men who have sex with other men.

New HIV diagnoses among men who have sex with men under age 30 have increased by 33 percent in the past six years. New diagnoses have doubled among men who have sex with men ages 13 to19, while declining by 22 percent among older men who have sex with men.

"We are very concerned about the increase in HIV among young men who have sex with men," Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, health commissioner for New York City, said in a statement. "We're headed in the wrong direction. Unless young men reduce the number of partners they have, and protect themselves and their partners by using condoms more consistently, we will face another wave of suffering and death from HIV and AIDS."

The HIV data parallel a New York City health department report showing a sharp increase in syphilis cases among men who have sex with men.

Syphilis and HIV are a dangerous combination, because syphilis genital sores make HIV easier to spread and HIV lowered immunity makes syphilis harder to treat, Frieden said.
