The health department Monday recalled as many as 7 million condoms supplied by Zalatex that failed to meet quality standards, Business Day reported Tuesday. Zalatex supplies condoms produced by Latex Surgical Products.
Zalatex allegedly paid an official at the South African Bureau of Standards to approve the defective condoms.
Up to 7 million condoms, a critical part of the nation's effort to stop the spread of HIV, may have been distributed free of charge. Almost 3.6 million condoms produced by LSP had already been quarantined, health department spokesman Sibane Mngadi said. He urged people to return condoms made by the company with the lot number 4308/ZLX.
