Minnelli, Staley to present amfAR awards

United Press International - May 31, 2007

NEW YORK, May 31 (UPI) -- Entertainer Liza Minnelli and HIV/AIDS activist Peter Staley will be the presenters for the Eighth amfAR Honoring with Pride event in New York.

The Foundation for AIDS Research's Awards of Courage are to be presented Tuesday during Gay & Lesbian Pride Week, the organization said in a news release Thursday.

The latest honorees are: Dr. Barbara Starrett, known for her work providing quality healthcare to New York's gays and lesbians; David Barr, a long-time HIV treatment activist and educator; and gossip columnist Liz Smith, who has helped raise millions of dollars to fight AIDS.

Earlier this year, the group gave similar awards to John Demsey, an Estee Lauder executive who also has been a significant AIDS fundraiser; MTV Networks executive William H. Roedy, chairman of the U.N.'s Global Media AIDS Initiative; and actress Whoopi Goldberg, known for her AIDS and humanitarian work.

The global non-profit organization is dedicated to the support of AIDS research; HIV prevention, treatment education; and the advocacy of sound AIDS-related public policy. Since 1985, amfAR invested $260 million in its programs and awarded grants to more than 2,000 research teams worldwide.
