Annan: More needs to be done against AIDS

United Press International - December 2, 2006

NEW YORK - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in his World AIDS Day message, said the progress that has been made against AIDS requires even greater mobilization.

"Financial resources are being committed like never before, people have access to antiretroviral treatment like never before, and several countries are managing to fight the spread like never before," Annan said Friday. "Now, as the number of infections continues unabated, we need to mobilize political will like never before."

Annan said this year's theme, accountability, applies to both national leaders and ordinary people. He said leaders must not only provide resources to fight AIDS, but also work for social changes like the emancipation of women, to help prevent AIDS.

Business owners, teachers, religious leaders and others must also do what they can, he said.
