International team to study protein, AIDS

United Press International - December 1, 2006

STELLENBOSCH, South Africa - Investigators from the United States and South Africa will study the value of protein supplements for people affected with HIV and AIDS.

Researchers hope to determine the effects of high-quality protein supplementation on the health and nutrition of people living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. To date, no one undertaken a examination of the value of protein supplementation in under-served populations, they said.

Researchers said they would compare the effects of a beverage containing soy protein to a product without supplemental protein. They said their evaluation should be completed by fall 2007.

Participants are the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health and the Solae Co., both of St. Louis, which will work with researchers at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.

Roy Kennedy, a university faculty member and the the project's principal investigator, said the study should yield a better understanding of the role of high quality protein in the health of people living with AIDS.

The research project was announced Friday, which was World AIDS Day.
