United Press International -- November 30, 2006
The study was released for World AIDS Day.
Researchers looked at the effect of AIDS in the 43 countries with the highest rates of infection, the BBC reported. Seventy percent of them are in sub-Saharan Africa.
The report estimated that between 1994 and 2005 AIDS cost 1.3 million jobs annually worldwide, most of them in Africa. About 36 million people worldwide of working age are believed to be HIV-positive.
"HIV/Aids is adding an enormous burden to countries struggling to emerge from poverty," said Odile Frank, one of the authors of the report. "We need more employment opportunities for people with HIV/Aids and an end to discrimination against people with the virus to help them to secure work."
