Group: G8 leaders should keep AIDS promise

United Press International -- November 30, 2006

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Urgent action is needed if universal access to AIDS prevention, treatment and care is to be achieved by 2010, advocates said Thursday.

Every day 8,000 people die of AIDS, yet with a funding gap of $10 billion a year only 20 percent of people living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, are receiving treatment, the anti-poverty group ActionAid said.

Across Asia only one in six people are receiving treatment, the group said, while in India treatment remains at below 10 percent of need.

"More than a year after world leaders (in the G8) committed to universal access there is still no funding plan to finance this goal," said Aditi Sharma, head of the AIDS team at ActionAid.

In particular, more attention needs to be paid to empowering women -- one of the groups most vulnerable to AIDS, Sharma said. "While there is now some recognition that the fight against AIDS will not be won unless gender inequality and violence against women and girls are targeted, there is no government or donor around the world committing adequate funds or implementing programs needed to advance the sexual and reproductive rights of women and reduce their vulnerability."
