Clinton unveils $60 child AIDS treatment

United Press International -- November 30, 2006

NEW DELHI (UPI) -- A 3-in-1 AIDS pill for kids will soon be available for under $60 per year, former U.S. President Bill Clinton said Thursday.

The treatment, which drug manufacturers Cipla and Ranbaxy have committed to produce for the low price, is in child-friendly tablet form and does not require refrigeration, Clinton said at a children's hospital in New Delhi, where he joined Sonia Gandhi to launch a child AIDS initiative in India.

In addition, the foundation has successfully negotiated lower prices for 19 pediatric AIDS treatments as part of an effort with the international drug purchase facility UNITAID to assist 40 countries to expand treatment to 100,000 additional children in 2007.

UNITAID was established in September by France, Brazil, Chile, Norway and the United Kingdom to aid in the purchase of AIDS treatment for low-income countries. UNITAID will provide the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative with $35 million in the next year to buy medicines and diagnostics, and the foundation will contribute $15 million more for technical assistance.
