Man gets prison sentence for spreading HIV

United Press International - November 24, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. - A Kansas judge has sentenced a man who knowingly exposed three women to the HIV virus to 32 months in prison and 56 months probation.

Judge Stephen Six imposed the sentence after a jury found 30-year-old Robert W. Richardson II guilty on four counts of exposing the women to the virus, the Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World said.

None of the women have tested positive for HIV, but they are adamant that Richardson be punished.

The case is the first in Kansas history involving an HIV-exposure charge. Richardson could face more prison time after similar trials in nearby cities.

Richardson admitted his actions were unethical but said sending him to prison would not fix anything, the newspaper said.

"Fighting to put me in a cage will do far, far more harm than good," he said in court Wednesday.
