HIV rates rise among Thai youth

United Press International - November 24, 2006

BANGKOK - HIV infection rates among Thailand's teens and young adults increased this year over last, public health officials say.

The estimated 15,000 newly reported HIV infections for people between the ages of 15 and 24 accounts for 40 percent of the total number of new infections, said Somyos Charoensak, a Public Health Ministry deputy secretary-general, The Nation reported Friday.

This year marked the first time teenage mothers between the ages of 15 and 19 were reported infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, with 0.44 percent new cases, The Nation said.

The infection rate of pregnant teens was nearly half the overall infection rate of pregnant women of all ages, which had dropped overall, Somyos said.

The HIV infection rate also rose in new army personnel, which rose from 0.4 percent in 2005 to 0.5 percent in 2006, Somyos said.
