Global Fund cuts HIV funds for Uganda

United Press International - November 7, 2006

KAMPALA, Uganda - The east African nation of Uganda will not get HIV and malaria funding in the sixth round of Global Fund disbursement.

The cuts were likely due to a lack of action on past mismanagement of health funds, the Kampala New Vision newspaper reported, and the country's health minister is flying to Geneva to appeal the fund's decision.

Uganda did, however, still receive $10.7 million from the fund to fight tuberculosis.

Nearby Kenya was also given funding only for the lung disease.

There were 85 new grants total in the sixth round, bring the fund's total commitment to nearly $7 billion distributed among 136 countries.
