Report: STDs on the rise in Australia

United Press International - October 11, 2006

MELBOURNE - A new report on Australia's sexual health shows a 41 percent increase in the number of new HIV diagnoses in the last five years.

The paper released by the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research also revealed a dramatic rise in chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Chlamydia was the most frequently reported notifiable condition in 2005 with 41,311 cases -- a fourfold increase since 1995 -- while gonorrhea and syphilis rates doubled in the same period.

The report launched a conference of the Australasian Society for HIV Medicines in Melbourne and is the first to map the long-range trends in the nation's sexual health.

Prof. John Kaldor, NCHECR deputy director at the University of New South Wales, said some some increases in the number of sexually transmitted diseases could be due to more people coming forward for diagnosis.

"But it's very possible that people are just not prioritizing safe sex as they maybe used to in the very serious HIV/AIDS era," he said.
