The official Xinhua news agency reports the Academy of Military Medical Science will begin production of the drug IBE-5.
He Fuchu, vice president of the academy, said the drug has had major breakthroughs in tests on monkeys and that safety of it is "reliable."
He said HBE-5 curbed HIV cell duplication and has performed better than other therapies.
Domestic drug producer, the Jiangzhong Pharmaceutical Group, a partner with the academy, is applying for the patent.
