Russia holds pageant for HIV positive

United Press International - November 28, 2005

MOSCOW (UPI) -- Russian health officials say that a beauty contest for young HIV-positive women will help change attitudes about AIDS.

The Miss Positive-2005 contest is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 1, which happens to be World AIDS Day, Mosnews reported.

"With this small action we are trying to change the general public's attitude," said Gennady Onishchennko, a top health officer. "Why can't these people live like ordinary people do? They can and they should, in any society. Just like people live with hepatitis B and other diseases."

Experts believe there are between 800,000 and one million people with AIDS in Russia, 80 percent of them under the age of 30.
