Sergei Paladyev, who has been HIV-positive since 1999, will be given the additional charge if either or both of his victims tests positive for HIV, The Moscow Times reported Wednesday.
Police investigator Vadim Bagaturia said that Paladyev, 30, approached two female students, aged 18 and 22 years, at around 9 p.m. Nov. 1 near a park that is part of eastern Moscow's Kuskovo Estate. When the women rejected his advances, Paladyev allegedly forced them at knifepoint into the park, tied them up and raped them repeatedly.
After three hours, he released one of the women, who immediately reported the attack to the police. They arrested Paladyev two days later at his nearby apartment.
Prosecutors said Paladyev has served three prison terms, twice for theft and once for robbery. After a 2001 conviction he was released in December 2004 for good behavior.
If convicted of infecting the women with HIV, he could get a maximum eight years in prison, in addition to the 10 years he could receive for a rape conviction.
