Libyans slam Bush over Bulgaria nurses

United Press International - October 18, 2005

TRIPOLI, Libya (UPI) -- Thousands of Libyans demonstrated in Tripoli, asking U.S. President George Bush to apologize for demanding pardon for Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death.

The nurses were convicted of injecting HIV into 380 Libyan children, 47 of whom have died so far.

The protesters, including families of the victims, marched Tuesday on the U.N. office and the U.S. liaison bureau in the Libyan capital shouting anti-U.S. and anti-Bulgarian slogans.

The demonstrators denounced what they called "interference with justice and violation of human rights," in reference to Bush's call for pardoning and releasing the nurses.

The protesters brandished banners which read "Bush supports terrorism," "Bush defend the killers, the criminal Bulgarian nurses."

The committee for the victims' families demanded the Libyan government cease all contacts with the U.S. administration until Bush apologizes for his remarks.
