Shanghai university to offer gay studies

United Press International - August 16, 2005

BEIJING, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Shanghai's Fudan University plans to offer a course on homosexuality to undergraduates next fall, the first by a Chinese school for non pre-med students.

Sun Zhongxin, an associate professor of sociology at the university told state-run media the class will cover topics related to homosexuality including health, legal and social issues.

Fudan University offered a limited enrollment graduate seminar on gay and lesbian studies in 2003. More than 1,500 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels expressed interest.

During the past two years, the school has invited outside scholars to lecture on the subject including Li Yinhe a noted sociologist from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Sun told the China Daily Monday he hoped the course, an elective open to the entire campus, will introduce the study of sexual orientation to more students. "It's a good thing even if students take the course merely out of curiosity, (as) more students will become educated in this area and contribute to academic study," he said.

The class enrollment of 100 has already filled and the school is looking for space to accommodate increased demand.

The new undergraduate course is being sponsored by the Hong Kong-based Chi Heng Foundation. Its mission statement is "to create a harmonious, equal, and healthy society by funding and operating projects in education and care for children and adults impacted by AIDS, AIDS prevention and anti-discrimination."
