The HAART therapy also reduces mortality, but the optimal time to start it remains unknown.
The study says the current guidelines for starting the therapy when counts are between 200/uL (200 per microliter) and 350/uL may be too low.
The study, based on injection drug users, appears in the Sept. 15 issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases.
Cun-lin Wang and coworkers studied both HIV-positive and HIV-negative injection drug users to compare data in persons with the same mortality risk category.
A total of 1,503 subjects were followed from 1997 to 2000.
