Drug reduces HIV transmission to child

United Press International - Friday, July 9, 2004

BETHESDA, Md. -- Adding the drug nevirapine to standard treatments reduces mother-to-child HIV transmission, a group of international researchers reported Friday.

Researchers from the National Institutes of Health and the Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement in Paris reported a single dose of nevirapine given to a woman at the beginning of labor, when combined with a short course of the HIV drug AZT, reduced transmission of HIV to below 2 percent, similar to more expensive three-drug regimens used in developed countries.

In a second study, Harvard researchers also found some women who received nevirapine developed nevirapine-resistant HIV strains that faded away with time, but the women did not respond as well to later nevirapine treatment.

articipants in the first study received one of three regimens -- the standard AZT treatment plus single doses of nevirapine to mother and child, a single dose of nevirapine to the mother and a placebo to the child, or placebos to both mother and child.

Both studies included women from Thailand. The transmission rate for the AZT only group was 6.3 percent before that arm of the study was halted because it became apparent nevirapine combo treatment was much more effective, researchers said.
