Project ACHIEVE is run by the New York Blood Center and is part of the HIV Prevention Trials Network of the National Institutes of Health.
The initiative, the Explore study, was the largest behavioral counseling program for HIV prevention among men who have sex with men. The results, included in this week's edition of the medical journal the Lancet, found while the initiative reduced the number of HIV infections in the intervention group, compared to a control group, the amount was not statistically significant -- 115 new infections for the intervention group vs. 144 in the control group.
The study did find, however, men in the more frequent one-on-one counseling program showed a 20.5 percent decrease in high-risk behavior over the four-year study, which included more than 4,200 men in six major U.S. cities.
Researchers concluded that while the program did not meet with expectations, and should not be rolled out nationwide, it did show some benefit over standard, twice-yearly counseling.
