Gates rolls out $400m investment in India

United Press International - November 12, 2002

NEW DELHI, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates announced Tuesday an investment of $400 million over the next three years, saying it was the largest single sum invested outside the United States.

"India is of strategic importance as its developer and skill base continue to grow," Gates said. "Today an increasing number of dot-net projects across the globe are being developed by talented Indian companies; the Indian developer community is creating next generation dot-net applications."

Gates said the money would go toward education, partnerships, localization and development of Microsoft products.

He said Microsoft would invest in skill development and dot-not readiness of its Indian partners to enable them to leverage global opportunities around dot-net, which is software to connect information, people, systems and devices, the Press Trust of India reported.

Microsoft will also invest $20 million in project Shiksha, or education, to "train the trainers" in information technology. The project seeks to train some 80,000 teachers and 3.5 million students in IT over a period of five years. Microsoft would join with state education departments to set up 10 "Microsoft Academy Centers" and collaborate with more than 2,000 partner-driven school labs.

Gates also launched a new product in India -- Tablet PC -- that can be both as a notebook personal computer and a notepad.

"The Tablet PC is a great example of how computers are adapting to how people really work, whether they're taking notes in a meeting, collaborating wirelessly with colleagues or reading on screen. We're just scratching the surface of what is possible," Gates said.

On Monday, Gates announced a $100-million grant to India to fight the spread of AIDS.

India is home to biggest Microsoft development center outside United States.
