According to the ruling, the government must provide the drug Nevirapine to all women giving birth in state-run hospitals. The government must also set up a comprehensive program to reduce mother-to child transmission, it said.
Nearly 200 babies are born HIV-positive in South Africa every day and 25 percent of preganant women have the disease, but the government has argued the drug's safety has not been proven. It also says it does not have the resources to set up the plan, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.
The case was brought by a leading non-governmental organization.
