Report: South Africa AIDS numbers to soar

United Press International - October 16, 2001

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- As many as 7 million people could die from AIDS in South Africa by 2010, according to a report released Tuesday.

The partly government funded Medical Research Council, which issued the report, said about 40 percent of adult deaths last year were caused by AIDS.

"It is estimated that AIDS accounted for about 25 percent of all deaths in the year 2000 and has become the single biggest cause of death," the group said in a statement on its Web site.

MRC cautioned, however, that much of the data was empirical because "reliable statistics on HIV/AIDS deaths in South Africa are not available."

The government said the report was unreliable and is said to have pressured the MRC into delaying its release, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.

South Africa is believed to have the largest number of HIV/AIDS cases in the world -- officially estimated at 4.7 million, about 11 percent of the country's population.
