The spokesman, Fred Eckhard, said Annan met on the AIDS issue in Washington Wednesday with Secretary of State Colin Powell and Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, in Thompson's office.
"They talked for about 45 minutes on the secretary-general's call for action against AIDS," said Eckhard, who added, "Only AIDS was discussed."
The latter remark was in an apparent bid to head off questions about the recent vote in the Economic and Social Council that denied a seat for Washington on the Human Rights Commission.
"They talked about the global fund (to fight AIDS proposed by Annan), the role of U.N. agencies, local agencies" and next month's U.N. General Assembly special AIDS session, the spokesman said.
"The secretary-general will return to Washington Friday morning for a meeting with President Bush and the president of Nigeria to further exchange ideas on AIDS and the global fund."
Annan proposed the fund in a speech at the African AIDS Summit in Abuja, Nigeria, last month.
Powell and Thompson, who chair a U.S. task force on AIDS, said the issue was of major concern to President Bush and that the president had mandated them to work together to address the matter in a comprehensive way, the spokesman said. They said that they also plan to work closely with the international community on the issue.
Carol Bellamy, who heads the U.N. Children's Fund, accompanied the secretary-general.
