UPI News Article: Abbott HIV test production shut down

United Press International - Wednesday, 27 December 2000

NORTH CHICAGO, Ill., Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Abbott Laboratories halted production of its HIV test kits following a letter from the Food and Drug Administration citing inadequate quality control guidelines.

The tests were manufactured at Abbott's Murex Diagnostics plant in Norcross, Ga.

The FDA letter was dated Dec. 15 and released Tuesday. In addition to citing inadequate quality control guidelines, the FDA said Abbott had failed to investigate complaints about inaccurate test results.

Abbott said it suspended production because the plant failed to meet Abbott standards. Spokesman Don Braakman told Wednesday's Arlington Heights (Ill.) Daily Herald production was halted before the FDA inspection.

"We're trying to work through the process and find out why it's not up to par," Braakman said.
