He faces a prison term of up to 6 years when he is sentenced on April 8.
State health officials say NuShawn Williams gave the AIDS-causing virus to 13 teens, mostly from Chautauqua County.
Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson says Williams admitted he had shown a "depraved indifference" to human life and engaged in conduct which created a grave risk of death to another person by having unprotected sex with a minor in May 1997.
Williams was counseled about his HIV status in September 1996.
Williams' lawyer has claimed his client is mentally ill.
The Bronx man was convicted of robbery at age 15, and at 17 he spent a year in jail on a murder charge before he was acquitted.
Williams identifies himself as a member of the Bloods street gang, and is currently serving 1 to 3 years in a New York City prison on drug charges.
According to prosecutors, Williams moved upstate and hung around playgrounds and dance floors, hunting for teenagers willing to trade sex for drugs -- even though he knew he was HIV-positive.
More than 1,400 people from Chautauqua County, N.Y., have been tested for AIDS since health officials made public their fears of Williams.
