Hale House expands reach

United Press International - Tuesday, February 09, 1999

NEW YORK, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- The revelation that 37 percent of New York City's pediatric AIDS babies are Latino, has prompted Hale House to announce its Hispanic desk, along with its Prayer Parent Program, Thursday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. at 152 West 122 Street, Harlem.

Roberto Clemente, Jr., one of America's prominent Hispanic benefactors, will serve as honorary chairman. He will make the announcement, as an expression of Valentine concern for Metropolitan Latino babies in crisis.

Hale House, now marking its 30th anniversary, is America's oldest and best known independent agency caring for babies born addicted to drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and sometimes infected with HIV.

"Latino babies and childcare staff have been an essential part of the Hales House experience since my mother, the late Mother Clara Hale, first opened the doors of her five room Harlem apartment to 22 addicted infants thirty years ago. Those first babies, Hispanic and black, were nurtured, held, fed and loved by the entire neighborhood," said Dr. Lorraine E. Hale, president of the Harlem agency.

Some 150 Latino churches have been requested to participate in Prayer Parent Program for babies in crisis.
