Wilson said in today's bill-signing messsage that about 100,000 California health care workers are injured by accidental needle sticks every year, with possible exposures to such diseases as hepatitis and HIV.
Proponents of the bill say the safety measures it envisions would reduce such incidents by 75 percent.
The legislation by Assemblywoman Carole Migden, D-San Francisco, requires state adoption of emergency regulations to enhance needle safety by next Jan. 15, and compliance by health care employers by Aug. 1.
The state Standards Board will prescribe the regulations as amendments to the state's present workplace safety guidelines on bloodborne pathogens.
The bill was endorsed by the Service Employees International Union, the nation's largest healthcare union, and its California Nurse Alliance, among others.
