Doctor sanctioned for aiding suicide

United Press International; Thursday March 12 4:15 PM EST

TORONTO, March 12 (UPI) _ A Toronto doctor has lost his license after pleading guilty to charges of professional misconduct in helping two patients attempt suicide.

Dr. Maurice Genereux appeared today before a five-member disciplinary panel of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

He pleaded guilty to four charges of professional misconduct. The panel withdrew three other charges.

In December, Genereux pleaded guilty in a criminal court to administering sleeping medication to two HIV-infected patients in 1996. One of the patients died of an overdose. The other recovered after a friend found him and called an ambulance.

The panel said it had "no hesitation whatsoever" in revoking Genereux's license. It said, "The college finds Dr. Genereux's conduct to be reprehensible and a serious breach of professional standards."

Genereux and the panel had reached agreement earlier on the plea and the penalty. Genereux is scheduled to be sentenced in a criminal court next month and faces up to 14 years in prison.

Genereux becomes the first Canadian doctor to be convicted of assisting terminally ill patients commit suicide.

He would be eligible after one year to apply to for reinstatement in order to get his license back, but he would need to prove to the panel that he has been rehabilitated.

Genereux also had his license suspended in 1995 after pleading guilty to sexual misconduct.
