Big boost in employing people with HIV

United Press International; Monday January 26 5:57 PM EST

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 26 (UPI) _ Officials report a 60 percent increase in the employment of HIV-positive workers in San Francisco.

The announcement, by ABC Positive Resource Center, a unique employment and financial benefits counseling agency for people with HIV, will be officially made Tuesday at the first AIDS Summit hosted by San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. The summit is aimed at discussing the changing face and needs of people infected with the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome, AIDS.

Agency Executive Director Paul Causey attributed the success to new treatments and increased services. Last year 482 employees infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV, were successfully placed in jobs. He says that's a 60 percent jump from the previous two years.

Causey says, "We are excited that one-fifth of the placements were for full-time, permanent employment. Some people with HIV and AIDS are doing well enough to make these kinds of placements possible." The center offers benefits counseling, skill building, computer training and job placement for HIV-positive individuals.
