The defeat Friday was the second blow for 28-year-old Michael Blucker, who claimed in his $3 million civil suit that he had contracted the virus that causes AIDS while incarcerated at Menard Correctional Center in Chester, Ill. A jury cleared five prison employees of similar charges last August but deadlocked on two men _ Menard's psychiatrist and the head of the prison's internal-affairs unit.
Blucker, a convicted burglar and car thief from Crystal Lake, Ill., brought the two prison officials back to trial, alleging they deliberately ignored assaults against him.
Blucker says staff ignored his reports that he was being sexually abused by gang members in Menard. Blucker alleges he was kept in sexual slavery for nearly a year, sold as a prostitute and forced to smuggle in drugs from women visitors. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch says Blucker tested HIV-negative after being sent to Menard in May 1993, but was found to be HIV-positive in a test the following April.
