The black velvet gown was worn by the princess to the 1985 opening of the musical "Les Miserables." It is believed to be the first of her gowns to be auctioned off since her recent death in a Paris car crash.
It is to be sold at auction at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. The proceeds are to be used to benefit Community Servings, an AIDS charity in Boston.
Boston boutique owner Barbara Jordan bought the gown at Christie's for $36,800. With the help of novelist Robert B. Parker, Jordan donated the dress to Community Servings, a charity that feeds people living with AIDS.
The executive secretary of the charity, Dede Ketover, said, "Diana was one of the first international celebrities to commit time and effort to the fight against AIDS."
