Miss America stresses action on AIDS

United Press International; Thursday, October 9, 1997 - 11:51 AM EDT

WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 (UPI) _ Kate Shindle, Miss America 1998, says it is time "to stop the rhetoric and start taking action" in the fight against AIDS.

Shindle told a news conference the time is "long past for us to stop waiting passively" for one solution to fight AIDS.

Shindler said when she won her crown she would speak out on the subject of AIDS during her reign as Miss America.

On Wednesday, Shindle visited the Sexual Minority Youth League Assistance, a gay and lesbian youth group in Washington that provides social and support services.

She also was briefed on AIDS issues Wednesday next door to the White House by the National Organizations Responding to AIDS (NORA) coalition. NORA is co-chaired by David Harvey, executive director of AIDS Policy Center.

Harvey said Shindler's appearances demonstrate that "she is not afraid to talk about gay youth, minority women, and how we must do more to fight a surge in new HIV infections in these groups."
