United Press International; Thursday, September 25, 1997 - 5:10 PM EDT

ATLANTA, Sept. 25 (UPI) _ New federal figures show New York City leads the list of 50 U.S. cities with the highest AIDS rates.

New York had 117.2 AIDS cases for every 100,000 people in the city. Next on the list was Jersey City, N.J., just across the Hudson River from Manhattan's Wall Street financial district, followed by Miami.

Jersey City had 109.8 cases for every 100,000., and Miami, recorded 86.6 cases of AIDS per 100,000.

Today's report, which covers the months between July 1996 and June 1997, was published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta.

Denver, Colo., and Bill Clinton's hometown of Little Rock, Ark., were tied for the fewest AIDS cases, with 17.5 AIDS incidents per 100,000.

Federal statisticians say that the District of Columbia, when taken alone, topped the 50 states and territories with an AIDS rate of 220.2 per 100,000 people. New York was second at 68.9 with New Jersey a distant third at 47.3.

For the District of Columbia metropolitan area, including surrounding Virginia and Maryland counties, the rate is 44.2 AIDS cases per 100,000.

The lowest rates recorded by the states were South Dakota's 1.4 per 100,000 and North Dakota's 1.6.
