50 volunteers ready for AIDS test

United Press International; Sunday, September 21, 1997 11:51 PM EDT

CHICAGO, Sept. 21 (UPI) _ Fifty healthy volunteers affiliated with a Chicago doctors' group are ready to risk their lives and test an AIDS vaccine made from a live but weakened strain of HIV.

Members of the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care are planning to meet next week to discuss the idea with officials from the National Institutes of Health.

The 50 volunteers _ 39 of whom are physicians _ would be injected with a weak strain of the AIDS virus that's been modified to slow its ability to replicate.

The viral strain is designed to serve as a vaccine that would train the body's immune system to fight and resist full-strength HIV.

Leaders of the group tell the Chicago Tribune that ideally they'd like approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to begin a study of the vaccine.

But, frustrated with the slow progress of AIDS research, the doctors say they'll go ahead with or without federal approval.

Dr. Gordon Nary explained his decision to volunteer, saying, ``there should be no reason to delay continual work on the development of the vaccine simply because some people think that there will not be any volunteers.''

More than 2,100 healthy volunteers have participated in clinical HIV vaccine trials, the Tribune said. But none of those involved a live strain of the virus.
