U.S. should do more, survey shows

United Press International - Monday, June 18, 1990

BOSTON - Most Americans believe the government should do more to combat the spread of AIDS with such steps as greater tax support for drug treatment centers and early classroom education for children, a survey showed Sunday.

In the nationwide survey conducted for The Boston Sunday Globe, 61 percent of 1,000 adults polled said the government is not doing enough to fight AIDS. Slightly less than half that number said their communities were doing enough to help those with AIDS or infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV.

An overwhelming majority, 86 percent, said more tax money should go to increase the number of drug treatment facilities, but only about 40 percent said those who contracted the disease through drug use should be treated with compassion.

Almost one-fourth in the survey said they felt "somewhat" at risk of getting the disease. One-fifth said they knew someone with acquired immune deficiency syndrome or infected with the HIV virus.

Fifty-seven percent of the whites interviewed said they had done nothing to lower their risk of contracting the disease. A quarter of the blacks and Hispanics polled said they used condoms and limited their number of sexual partners.

Nearly everyone polled knew how AIDS is transmitted -- through sexual intercourse, using an infected hypodermic needle or receiving contaminated blood.
