The national Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health announced establishment of a toll-free telephone service to provide information about government-sponsored tests of AIDS drugs.
By calling 1-800-TRIALSA between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. PDT Monday through Friday, HIV-infected people and others interested in AIDS treatments can receive details on studies under way at the more than 100 medical centers in the National Institutes of Health's testing network.
It is often difficult for AIDS patients and their doctors to keep abreast of which promising AIDS drugs are being tested, where the studies are taking place and which study might best suit the patient's condition.
"As more promising therapies have emerged, the pace of clinical research on AIDS has quickened and now several new studies are literally opening each month," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
The Food and Drug Administration requires all drugs to undergo a series of human tests for safety and effectiveness before they are put on the market.
The telephone service is staffed by three "health specialists," one of them Spanish speaking, who provide callers with the latest computerized information on AIDS drug trials. Callers can also request computer printouts of the information.
The identity of all callers will be kept confidential, officials said.
