The study shows that sexual contact or needle-sharing accounted for a majority of the 93 cases reported between July 1982 and Aug. 1, 1987. Only seven remained unexplained, the scientists wrote in the journal Science.
"The high cumulative rate of AIDS in Belle Glade appears to be the result of HIV (AIDS virus) transmission through sexual contact and intravenous drug abuse; the evidence does not suggest transmission of HIV through insects," the researchers said.
"Although it is not possible to state how each of the seven Belle Glade AIDS patients with undetermined risks became infected, it is unlikely that they represent instances of HIV transmission through unrecognized modes."
Among 877 randomly selected adults, 28 tested positive for exposure to the AIDS virus but did not necessarily have symptoms, said the scientists, affiliated with the federal Centers for Disease Control and the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services.
HIV-positive adults were more likely than others to be from Haiti, have a lower income and have never married.
