The statement was prompted by reports that some churches have stopped using the common cup or have begun dipping the communion wafer in wine as an alternate form of celebrating holy communion.
"This practice undermines a principal symbol of Christian and Anglican worship," the statement said, referring to the common cup, and "acts out of a lack of scientific data" on the spread of acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
