Plainfield Schools Continue Ban on 5-Year-Old With AIDS

United Press International - November 14, 1985

PLAINFIELD, N.J., Nov. 13 - The Plainfield Board of Education voted today to continue to bar a 5-year-old girl with AIDS from kindergarten despite orders by the state and a judge that she be admitted.

The school board decided to continue the ban and go to court to appeal the State Board of Education's decision that the unidentified girl be admitted.

The state board voted, 7 to 1, last week to back State Education Commissioner Dr. Saul Cooperman's order that the city school system admit the girl, who has been studying at home since September.

Judge Frederick Kentz of Superior Court in Union County also ordered the girl admitted, but delayed enforcement of his order to give the state board time to consider the case. The stay of the order is to expire on Thursday.
