AIDS-Free Blood Substitute Prepared for Emergency Use

The New York Times - November 8, 1985

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8 - An AIDS-free blood substitute originally developed by United States Army researchers for battlefield transfusions may soon be available for hospital and emergency use, according to the company that developed it.

"This substance is not artificial blood," Dr. Henry Tomizawa, a biochemist, said at a news conference Wednesday.

He is president of the Statco Company, which manufactures the blood substitute in Irvine, Calif., "It is made by removing the wall of human red blood cells and purifying the hemoglobin," he said.

The substance, called pyridoxylated-polymerized hemoglobin, has been tested for the past 15 years and was first produced at an Army laboratory in San Francisco. It has only been tested in rats and baboons.

"When the hemoglobin is purified in this process, all viruses are removed," Dr. Tomizawa said.
