On Friday, The Miami Herald reported that tests had shown at least two cancer patients treated at the Immunology Researching Centre in Freeport were given serum infected with HTLV-III, the virus that causes AIDS.
"It's horrible," Dr. Gregory Curt, deputy director of cancer treatment at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., was quoted as saying. "Not only is the (cancer treatment) theory unproven . . . but now patients are paying thousands for a contaminated blood product."
"The Immunology Researching Centre in Freeport Bahamas has been ordered to cease operations on Wednesday," an official government communique said.
An investigation of the center, which started on June 29, revealed that the center's operations constituted "a serious health hazard," according Minister of Health Norman Gay.
Gay said the investigation began following a report about unsatisfactory conditions at the center from the Pan American Health Organization and the United States Centers for Disease Control.
The clinic is run by experimental zoologist Lawrence Burton, who claims to have developed a secret blood serum that can combat cancer.
