City Officials Seek U.S. Help Against AIDS

United Press International - July 9, 1983

Health officials from 11 cities called on President Reagan today to provide more funds to combat acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS, an incurable disease claiming an increasing number of victims and causing public anxiety.

There have been 1,737 cases of AIDS diagnosed since 1979, and 678 of the victims have died, according to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.

However, the officials said the general public's fears about contracting the disease are unwarranted.

The city officials urged Mr. Reagan to support the provision of $92 million through fiscal year 1984 to help combat AIDS, which has affected mostly homosexuals, intravenous drug users and Haitian immigrants.

The health officials said the Federal funds were needed not only to care for patients but also to educate the public and provide educational and psychological help for those in high-risk groups fearful of contracting AIDS.
