Mayors' Group Urges Research for AIDS Cure

United Press International - June 13, 1983

A special task force at the U.S. Conference of Mayors called on the Federal Government today to commit itself to finding a cure for acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The Mayors are scheduled to vote Wednesday on the task force's recommendation, one of 35 proposals made today.

Dr. Jeffrey Kopland of the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta told the panel, chaired by San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein, that 1,552 cases of the disease, known as AIDS, had been reported so far, most of them among male homosexuals who had frequent sex with varying partners.

About 40 percent of all victims have died, Dr. Kopland said, but for people who contracted the disease two years ago the mortality rate is 75 percent.

The task force called on the Federal Government to finance "adequate" research and to allocate money for education, care and treatment of patients and training of health-care professionals.
