He won the prize for his pioneering socio-economic development work, which has brought self-sufficiency to millions of poor families in Bangladesh. In 1983, Professor Yunus founded the Grameen Bank, which provides micro-credit loans to the rural poor including communities affected by HIV.
For many years, Muhamed Yunus has helped to disseminate HIV prevention and care messages and has raised awareness on the importance of the involvement of the private sector in development issues.
UNAIDS recognizes Professor Yunus' commitment to aleviating poverty and the important contributions he has made to the AIDS response.
