UNAIDS Statement - March 15, 2004
The report that UNAIDS and the other UN agencies present at the meeting endorsed a proposal to stop funding AIDS NGOs in Africa due to their lack of accountability is completely erroneous.
On the contrary, UNAIDS support to NGOs and civil society has grown significantly over the years. In fact, UNAIDS is the first United Nations programme to include NGOs, including associations of people living with HIV, in its governing body.
NGOs remain the cornerstone of the AIDS response in countries and their role is becoming increasingly important as they shoulder the burden of preventing, caring and providing treatment to people living with HIV and AIDS. In fact, UNAIDS believes more support should be provided to NGOs at country level in order to strengthen their capacity to respond to the epidemic.
